Refuelling intervals

For older stoves that are not ‘ecodesign’ it’s important to re-fuel when there is still some flame left.

How to light your fire - step 4

If we wait until there are just embers before adding logs, there can be several minutes of significant smoke before the temperature gets high enough for ignition back to flames. If we have to refuel on embers, it’s best to add a few bits of kindling, then the logs. It will also be useful to increase the air supply temporarily until the larger logs catch fire.

For ecodesign stoves: Refuelling on embers (or close to it) may be advised by the manufacturer. These stoves tend to be hotter so the refuelled logs catch faster. It may still be beneficial to increase the air supply temporarily.
